How to actually use banner exchanges?

Sorry for newbie question, but I really don't understand how to use banner xchanges.
I can put code from banner xchange network to my site. What's next? Which for me from this good? How do I get impressions and clicks for my site? Do I need to make a banner for yourself?

ps. I used one time FunKlicks. Hung their banners on the site and poured a some amount of traffic and got nothing in return. Now I'm hardly going to use them, because nobody from FK not said me that to get traffic from banner exchanges, you need to upload your banner.

Basically, after signing up, you put the code on your site. Banner Xchange will check your site and approve it once the once is on your site.

The time between the code placement and approval, the impression and click would not be counted. So login and check your status and stats. Contact the Banner Exchange if possible and give the Banner Exchange 24 hours to approve your site.

Once you put the code on your site and Banner Exchange approve your site, you will start earning impression and click. If the Banner Exchange has a 9:10 exchange ratio, it means for every 10 clicks you send through them, you get 9 clicks credits on your account.

So when another member send a visitor through the Banner Exchange to your site, you will have 1 click credits less.

That's how it works. Let me know if you still have any doubts.
